Advanced technology has rationalized and simplified operations at sea; however, this development has resulted in higher demands being made of the operator. Good health has become an important safety factor: a good state of health is crucial both to preventing strain injuries and to ensuring alertness and optimal performance at work. Physical activity is a powerful preventive "medicine" for the maintenance of good health and the prevention of overweight and musculoskeletal disorders. The aim of this paper is to analyse the habits and preferences of seafarers with regard to physical activity. Individual health factors, physical activity levels and work-related problems were surveyed on board vessels in a Norwegian shipping company. A questionnaire was completed by 577 seafarers. Higher physical activity levels reflect better lifestyle behaviours amongst white collar workers: A descriptive cross-sectional study

Objective: To examine the relationship between physical activity level and healthy lifestyle behaviours of white-collar workers. Materials and Methods: The International Physical Activity Questionnaire Short Form (IPAQ-SF) was used to determine the level of physical activity, and the Healthy Lifestyle Behaviours Scale-II (HLBS-II) was used to evaluate the lifestyle behaviours. The researchers recorded anthropometric measurements of the participants via face-to-face method and questionnaires were implemented via online forms. Statistical analysis of the study was performed with the IBM SPSS Statistics version 20.0 program. Descriptive analysis was done, and all the data were presented as means and (±) standard deviation (SD). Statistical significance was set at p<0.05. The influence of vessel movements on the energy expenditure of fishermen in relation to activities and occupational tasks on board

Previous studies of professional fishing activities have indicated that vessel movements correlate to fishermen's energy expenditure. We have previously demonstrated that even in calm weather, the heel and pitch significantly increase the fishermen's energy expenditure, ignoring the activities carried out on board. This continuation of the study goes further by exploring the relation between the exposure to the ship's movements and the fishermen's energy expenditure during various physical activities on board. Four fishermen on 2 contemporary steel trawlers recorded their work activities on an hourly basis during a 4 days fishing voyage. Prevalence and trends of leisure-time physical activity by occupation and industry in U.S. workers: the National Health Interview Survey2004-2014

Studies describing prevalence and trends of physical activity among workers in the United States are scarce. We aimed to estimate prevalence and trends of "sufficient" leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) during the 2004-2014 time period among U.S. workers. Data were collected for U.S. workers in the National Health Interview Survey. LTPA was categorized as sufficiently active (moderate intensity, ≥150 minutes per week), insufficiently active (10-149 minutes per week), and inactive (<10 minutes per week). Prevalence of LTPA was adjusted for age using 2010 U.S. working population as a standardized age distribution. Prevalence trends of "sufficient" LTPA significantly increased from 2004 to 2014 (45.6% to 54.8%; P < .001). Functional health and perceived exertion in artisanal fishermen working offshore

INTRODUCTION: Fishing is a common means of obtaining raw materials for the food industry and drives a large economic market. OBJECTIVES: This field study aimed to evaluate functional health and work overload in artisanal fishermen. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 42 workers from Zone 18 fishing community in Passo de Torres, state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. The collected data included presence of pain and its location on a Corlett body diagram, pain severity measured with a visual analog scale, perceived exertion measured with a Borg scale, and grip and lumbar strength measured with dynamometers. RESULTS: Forty percent of fishermen had low back pain and 26% had low back muscle weakness. Perceived exertion was greater in the activity of pulling out the fishing net. DISCUSSION: This professional category requires greater attention with health policies that consider the actual context of their job.
